CCWD Recognizes One-Millionth Square Foot Conversion
to Water-Wise Front Yard
CONCORD – Since 2012, more than a million square-feet of thirsty lawn have been converted to water-wise landscaping through the Contra Costa Water District’s Lawn to Garden Rebate Program.
On Friday, Feb. 5, the owner of the one-millionth square foot of converted lawn was recognized by the District. Mr. Martin Hawco’s front yard in Concord had previously been all lawn, but now features a two-tiered design with a thick layer of mulch and a variety of drought-resistant plants that will quickly grow and save water for many years.
He was presented with a certificate of achievement, a conservation kit and a gift certificate donated by the Bancroft Garden Nursery.
CCWD offers rebates of up to $1,000 for customers who convert their front lawns to water-wise gardens. In conjunction with the rebate program, the District offers a Landscape Assistance program that will reimburse the cost of a two-hour consultation with a professional landscape designer. Mr. Hawco took advantage of both programs.
The District is offering two free workshops this spring on how to replace thirsty lawns with beautiful water-efficient landscaping on March 19 in Antioch and April 23 in Pleasant Hill.
