Governor
Names Contra Costa Water District Winner of
2008 Top Environmental Leadership Award
SACRAMENTO – Governor Schwarzenegger recently announced
that Contra Costa Water District (CCWD) is one of three recipients of the 2008
Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) in the
Children’s Environmental Education category.
The award program
recognizes individuals, organizations and businesses that have demonstrated
exceptional leadership for voluntary achievements in conserving California’s resources,
protecting and enhancing the environment, and building public-private
partnerships.
“This honor
recognizes CCWD’s commitment to improving the community that we serve,” said CCWD
General Manager, Walter J. Bishop. “CCWD has an obligation to our customers that
we operate in a sustainable way to protect our natural resources and
environment for generations to come.”
The District’s Water Education Program has made significant
contributions in the service area by teaching children, parents, and teachers
about conserving California’s
precious resources and protecting and enhancing our environment. Teachers have
come to rely upon CCWD’s education program to help
meet the state’s environmental science requirements, and consistently remark on
the outstanding quality of the program.
This year, a total
of 21 organizations were award recipients, chosen in eight different categories
based on their strength in specific areas including results, transferability,
environmental impact, resource conservation, economic progress, innovation and
uniqueness, pollution prevention, and environmental justice. CCWD won its award in the Children’s
Environmental Education category.
The Governor's
Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards program was established in 1993.
The award program is administered by the California Environmental Protection
Agency and the Resources Agency in partnership with the California Department
of Food and Agriculture, and the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency,
and the State and Consumer Services Agency.
