The start of the 5K-10K Race of the 2007 Los Vaqueros Tarantula Run. Nathanel Litwiller (no shirt) and Francis Leonard (1341) would finish one-two in the Men's 5K.
Five of six course records were broken at the Los Vaqueros Tarantula Run ll Oct. 27.Only the men’s half-marathon mark does not need to be re-written.
More than 340 runners turned out for the three mens and three womens races, and Nathanael Litwiller of Concord was the lone repeat winner.
Running without a shirt, Nathanael blistered the 5K again this year with a 17:45, clicking off each mile of the hilly 3.1-mile course at an average speed of 5:43 per mile. He broke last year’s time by more than a minute.
In the women’s 5K, Meagan Stathis of Livermore broke last year’s record by more than a minute with her 26:14.
The men’s 10K record was destroyed by more than nine minutes when Erin Ferreira crossed the line at 37:31.Five runners broke the old 10K record of 46:34.
Jenny Wilson of Discovery Bay took top women’s honors in the 10K and also finished fourth overall. She beat the old women’s mark by more than nine minutes with her 44:12 and that also beat the old men’s record by more than two minutes.
The half-marathon was very competitive with Paul Stephens just beating last year’s winner, Jeff Cowling, by one second and a 1:33.40 time. They both finished the demanding 12.2-mile course with an average pace of 7:09 per mile.
In the women’s half-marathon, Sharon Kovar broke the women’s half-marathon record time by nearly 90 seconds with a 1:51.38. More than 20 runners finished the half-marathon in under two hours.
Rain the week before the race and comfortable temperatures on Saturday made the Los Vaqueros trail courses fast for the runners. In addition, there was a fun 1K race for kids, where every finisher earned a blue ribbon.
A few runners on the 10k and half-marathon reported seeing tarantulas. Special and heartfelt thanks to our nearly 40 volunteers who helped with all phases of the race. We had volunteers from the Contra Costa Water District, the community and local high schools. We expect to have complete results available next week.
