The south entrance to the reservoir continues open for shore fishing. Just a reminder the marina and boat rentals are closed until the spring. We recommend calling us at (925) 371-2628 before coming out. The water level is currently at 42 percent of the new high water mark, and will be going up slightly in the next two weeks.
Our water temperature is 52 degrees. Dedicated anglers continued to catch some striped bass every day.
PLEASE NOTE: • We are still giving out Whopper mugs so if you catch a big fish, stop by the kiosk and weigh it on your way out of the park. • We have State of California Fishing Licenses for sale at the kiosk. • We have frozen bait available at the kiosk. • We remind anglers the limit on striped bass is two and they need to be at least 18 inches. • Shoreline access continues to be limited due to expansion efforts.
DAM EXPANSION UPDATES & CLOSURES The North entrance to the reservoir continues to be closed and will re-open in May of 2012. See the CCWD web site for details. The South entrance to the reservoir has some shoreline open to anglers. Please call 925.371.2628 for specific up-to-date information.
TROUT Trout fishing continues to be rated as very slow. We have very few anglers fishing for trout so we receive very few reports. The South cove is probably your best bet. We hope to plant 1000 pounds of two-pound trout sometime in mid- to late February. More details to be announced at a later date.
LARGEMOUTH BASS We have had no reports on largemouth bass. With limited access to good largemouth bass fishing areas we anticipate fishing to remain slow during the winter. Tossing a Senko in the South Cove might be worth a try. This time of year, you need to fish your Senko very slowly. Watermelon or purple are favorite colors.
STRIPER Fishing for stripers continues to be your best bet at the reservoir. Stripers from 18 inches to 12 pounds are caught by anglers putting in the time. Striper’s average between five and eight pounds. We anticipate striper fishing continuing to be a solid choice throughout the winter months. Cut anchovies, sardines or shad should work well. Some anglers will add scents to their bait. We suggest you take advantage of the 2nd rod stamp available from Fish and Game. Some anglers will use different baits on each rod. The bass are biting very slightly due to the cold water. (52 degrees) Anglers report lots of missed bites. Light line and smaller hooks can help hook striped bass.
SALMON No reports of salmon. Very few anglers are focusing on salmon. It might be worth making a couple dozen casts with half ounce kastmasters in varies colors.
CATFISH Fishing for catfish is slow due to cold water and lack of any rain. An occasional catfish is caught by anglers fishing for stripers. We need more rain to spark the catfish bite.
